“I’d done all the background research and had so many spreadsheets,” says Angela Wiggins, who moved to Lisbon from Nashville, Tennessee, in December and works remotely, “but I didn’t speak the #language and needed assistance on the hoops we needed to jump through.” Her move only came after investigating a number of #alternatives.

“Initially, I explored several countries — #Canada, #NewZealand, #Norway — but didn’t meet the #residency criteria. That led me to broaden the search to places I hadn’t thought of as a #possibility.

I had never visited #Portugal, but I was drawn to its sense of #safety, stable #banking system, efficient #healthcare, beautiful #landscapes, #cosmopolitan #culture and more relaxed #PaceOfLife.”

Translation: I didn’t bother to learn the language, and I’m exporting the worst traits of the USA.

You’ve Been Lied To About Roads For 60 Years

> There’s a major problem with the way our roads and traffic systems are designed—one that’s being overlooked at an enormous cost. The core idea behind how we build our roads, and by extension our towns, cities, and landscapes, is outdated and deeply flawed. What exactly are junk roads? Why have …

Wondering and pondering: in the past 20-something years we used #Skype to cheaply phone call far-away relatives and to #phone #call closer relatives when _we_ were far away.

Now that Skype will close, are there #alternatives to do the same (as in call land phones from the Internet)?
And no, both relatives have neither Internet nor a modern smartphone.

Cam someone help?

[EDIT: found it - alternatives-in.uk/directory/. Thanks Neil!]

The "EU Alternatives" site is a really useful index of non-USA tech providers, but it sadly (yet understandably) excludes UK services: european-alternatives.eu/

I *know* I saw a (pretty sparsely populated) UK equivalent of that EU-focused site ... but I can't find it. Any ideas what I might be thinking of? #alternatives #EUalternatives #UKtech #UKalternatives

The Fediverse has its own alternative to Twitch called OwnCast, a live streaming platform with built-in chat system.

You can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and they will post in your timeline when they go live. You can also sign into OwnCast chat using your Mastodon etc account.

More info at:

If you want to get started, I've just posted some good OwnCast accounts to follow over at @FediFollows

@ati1 They only stay away from the “F” and only then, if the “F” uses the AGPL if it’s for networked use. So we have to be careful to state exactly what we mean by “FOSS.”. Otherwise, they’re perfectly happy to take “liberally licensed” open source (open as in “open for business”) and enclose it. Or even use GPL licensed code on servers. Don’t forget that the Big Web – and thus surveillance capitalism – mostly runs on Linux.
