After streaming Splatoon 1 earlier today, I had a viewer mention that there is some problems with the new Splattercolor Screen special, and I later had a Squid School [youtu.be] video appear in my timeline (I see someone from fedi in their gameplay footage ) talking about some of the issues.
I imagine that there are some people out here on fedi who are affected by the Splattercolor Screen's effect. To those people who are affected (or even if you're not), what are your issues with the Splattercolor Screen?

@splatoon@wetdry.world @splatoon@lemmy.world [lemmy.world] I think it kind of sucks because it is entirely about a sensory input. I actually have no problem with it - in fact it barely causes problems for me at all. But when I played with a friend they struggled super hard with the color changes, having nothing to do with skill.

As far as I know I have full color vision and no disability that would relate to colors or sounds. The only vision problem I have is that I'm near sighted.
When the colors used are Blue v Yellow, I cannot tell the difference between them after getting hit by Screen. Both ink colors look white (or near white it's been a bit since I experienced this) to me. This is somewhat concerning if other people experience this since Blue v Yellow is one of the color lock options if I'm remembering properly.
I personally think Screen is very interesting but weak. In a vacuum where I only consider myself, I would be fine with Screen staying in the game essentially as is.
However, given what I've heard about other people having very serious problems with it, I sincerely hope Nintendo takes another look at the special. I would even be fine with, and kinda encourage, them locking Foil Squeezer and Sorella Undercover to prevent people from using them while they adjust Screen.
As for the community and tournaments, we should listen to the people most effected and from what I've heard that's largely banning it. Banning it sounds like the right call to me, but to be clear I'm only minimally effected by it, I'm not and will likely never be a tournament competitive player, and I don't run tournaments so my opinion should probably not be considered as much as others.
@Cosmiss I'm personally short-sighted too. There's definitely a struggle for me trying to tell the difference between the two at times.
One of my teammates just let us know that they can’t handle it and may have to sit out matches if the opposing team uses it.
I’m not sure what tournaments are going to enforce, that’s a discussion that can and should take more time, but at least as far as casual scrims go we’re hoping most teams will be okay with an “opponent can request you not use it” clause. From what I’m hearing it sounds like most of the community is on board with that as an interim compromise.
@splatoon@wetdry.world @splatoon@lemmy.world [lemmy.world] I just saw this video & I liked it. I think splattercolor screen's effect actually makes it easier for me sometimes because I can identify players by contrast instead of color, & color is difficult for me even though I have full color vision. It only makes things harder when there's no contrast between the colors & they both show up as white. I think splattercolor screen could have been executed better; I saw a YouTube comment on that video suggesting making it cause a fog effect instead of greyscale vision, I think a fog effect & decreasing contrast to make colors muddier instead of making everything greyscale would have been much better.
@splatoon I'm not really affected by the debuff of screen, but its been eye-opening to learn about how others are hit by it.
Screen doesn't feel like a satisfying special because it blocks everyone's view, barely does anything damage number-wise to opponents, and despite it being big, it is usually possible to just go around it and avoid the debuff. Because of this, I haven't been hit by it enough to see many of the ink colors with the debuff.
I'm more afraid of getting hit because I don't know what all debuff color combos are. I don't know if the debuff will make this color combo still have contrast or be indiscernible. I don't want to dig into how color lock looks because I like the color variety. And how is the debuff going to make splatfest colors look? And what about how tricolor battles will look?
It's scary not knowing how bad the debuff is going to be color-wise even as someone who is fine with the debuff.

I can't focus at all when I hear certain sounds, so the sound at the beginning shocked me a lot lmao.
I fixed it by wearing noise cancelling headphones when a weapon with splatercolor shows up, so it doesn't really affect me much
I kind of hate that I ignored my initial concerns for people that are sensitive to colour changes because I thought that nintendo would be able to remidy for that though :/
I’m not personally affected by it, but I am not at all surprised that a purely audiovisual special meant to disorient the player could be too disorienting to some. Yeah, this was a very bad idea they should not have put in the game!
I feel like this should be a teachable moment for game developers everywhere in what not to do, deliberately disorienting the player is dangerous. Even if it hadn’t been the worst case scenario of an accessibility issue, I don’t think this can ever be balanced for a multiplayer environment when some players will find it more disorienting than others.
@splatoon@wetdry.world @splatoon@lemmy.world [lemmy.world] In terms of the sensory issues. The effect of the screen's debuff is way too much for me. The bright filter combined with the sound overstimulates me to the point where I can't function until it wears off.
In my case, if the filter was darker and the sound effect toned back I would probably have the mental overhead to handle it but as it stands, no way. But even then, there are people who have it worse than me that can't handle the grayscale at all.
I saw a good idea for a rework of it maybe hiding the hud instead of messing with the colors
Outside of the sensory stuff, I think it does too good of a job at being opaque, not even your team can see through it? (why does it do that?)
