Can anyone identify this bird that was hanging out near my pond? My gut says red tailed hawk, but I want to be sure. I’m trying to figure out if my fish (4-6” or smaller; very snackable for a bird of that size) are at risk, or if he’s just looking for a drink. #birds #sandiego

So, yellow finches really don't like humans, do they? One was on a direct course to a newly opened, almost florescent zinnia, did a hard U turn back to a faded one.

Here are some birds I saw today in Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, New Zealand.

A Kawau Tūi–little black shag flew by along Riverlaw Terrace. This native species spread into the city from the north by about 2009. inaturalist.nz/observations/30

A yellowhammer was on the gravel lot by Sydenham Park. This species was introduced to the city by English settlers (236 birds were released from England in 1873): inaturalist.nz/observations/30

A couple of kererū were in the native forest in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, where kererū have been breeding recently. The birds today were feeding on kōwhai leaves. It's great to see their numbers building in the city. inaturalist.nz/observations/30

There's also the fluffy back end of a Tīrairaka–South Island fantail: inaturalist.nz/observations/30
