Discord might, according to the New York Times, have an initial public offering soon
In other words, external shareholders are going to be able to make decisions about the platform with the end goal of making money / return on investment.
I advise you migrate your DMs somewhere else, you probably don't want your important conversations stuck on a place which will likely become more and more hostile towards users
I do not have a solution for communities, although I wish I did.
My personal recommendation for personal chats, i.e small groups and DMs continues to be Signal [signal.org], which probably suits many well
If you have other priorities that's fine, I personally do also use Matrix and XMPP.
@cyrus how well suited can matrix be for systems? pluralbot is honestly pretty jank and i have multiple friends who use it
right now Kinda jank, I really think pluralbot (and alike) should be updated to use MSC4144: Per-Message profiles [github.com] but for that to work it'll also require clients to start supporting this :(
@fenrirre
@cyrus
ok i really did not expect to feel compelled to reply to somewhere on this post promoting the exact same thing a second time i promise im not just trying to shill lmfao i just think it is worth noting as a plural system that i think revolt is really cool and probably has the most sincerely useful (technical functionality) of any chat service ive used
it has a feature called masquerade that is basically server profile pictures and names but applied to a single specific message independently which allows for built in natively supported plural proxying while still being easy to moderate and check the associated account with a message
its not yet officially supported but i had a guy make a plugin that adds a system for using it and making profiles for your alters all with a nice gui
downside is this is not an option for the mobile app but i have been told official support is apparently an intended feature for the native mobile app when the basic stuff is out of the way
