The updates that are bringing Splatoon 1 and back online are now out!

Splatoon US patch notes [en-americas-support.nintendo.com]Mario Kart 8 US patch notes [en-americas-support.nintendo.com]

The respective updated version numbers for both games are 2.12.1 for Splatoon and 4.2.0 for Mario Kart 8.

The changes listed for Splatoon 1 are:

  • Fixed vulnerability related to online battles

And Mario Kart 8 has an additional change:

  • Deleted “Recommended” in tournaments

I find this incredibly disappointing considering both games have a hacking issue to the best of my knowledge (@SMAyden has a ton of clips of Splatoon 1 hackers) and there is NO excuse for spending 5 months on this if they haven't made it harder for people to exploit both games.

@splatoon @SMAyden @splatoon@lemmy.world maybe the downtime was to tackle those issues on the actual server side, instead of on the client?

@esm @SMAyden @splatoon@lemmy.world it was primarily to patch ENLBufferPwn [github.com] which was patched in several Switch and 3DS games last year via game updates

In Mario Kart 8, they removed recommended tournaments which I'm confused about, but tournaments do rely on Miiverse partially (to create one anyways)
