#WordWeavers 2504.08 — MC POV: What are the 3 most important things you always take with you when traveling (besides money, ID and keys if applicable)?

I don't care much for things. Oh, I'll use them, and properly value them, earn them when needs be, but only knowledge and people have real value. I wasn't born into wealth, but upon my parent's death, when I was five, the powerful decided I was somehow special. Wealth, training, and responsibility followed. I don't know exactly when I stopped being a kid who nerded out on magic† with her childhood friend, when I morphed into someone else's sharp tool. When I grew old enough to pass as an adult, with great precision, calculation, and planning, I ran away never to be found. My elite life wasn't what I wanted, what I needed.

Since then nothing, no thing, describes what I want or desire, other than simply my freedom to study and learn. When you don't have a place to return to, or a place to live, they call you homeless. I gave my former life up, and when I find a new situation that sours, I can give everything up again. Snap, like that. Being home-free is a freedom from being made to do what I dislike, or what's wrong. I've traveled across the continent on foot. I've lived in homeless encampments. The three things I take with me are a tarp, a bedroll, and my book of magic.

Those are things, of course. I take my skills, my common sense, and a sharp tongue, also. They keep me safe.

Another unproductive day - but I had fun with a friend.

I also cooked a real meal which turned out very yummy.

Feeling stressed about the next upcoming family visit and the many things I need to do.

It's an opportunity to practice honesty, transparency, communication and setting boundaries.

I recently finished writing a feminist SF web-novel that I published on Mastodon. Mars Needed Women is a woman-centric adventure story of overcoming adversity while being female, with all the warts and frustrations, not as a man in disguise. It starts with ugliness of today's world having become the dystopian norm a hundred years from now. It takes thinly veiled jabs at a prominent bad actor. Our heroine, May Ri escapes becoming little more than a housewife to help colonize Mars, if you can call being shanghaied escaping, and being required to have children. (She does get to choose the gorgeous supportive guy, though, so that's a positive.) She's there with her children as power slowly shifts from being male-dominated. As the mothers and daughters increasingly control Mars' future (how is spoilers), May Ri with the support of her daughters gets to help create a world (Mars) the way unfettered women would image it. The men of Earth will take affront, of course. They will learn that women don't fight like men, especially when their children's lives are threatened, and their wellbeing is at stake. #RSMarsNeededWomen

A tech clapped a bag over her mouth before she vomited up her last putrified meal, while enduring the blonde's glare as blood beaded around her nose. May Ri glowered back. Sitting on the wall, dragged on her butt, her inner ear then her innards soon informed her the wall was becoming the floor. From the author: “A hopeful deeply-dystopian feminist SF story, with thinly veiled jabs at our current world's bad actors making for a bad future. Please note the past tense in the title: Mars Needed Women. The story's women are going to work to bring down the system, at least that part that's oppressing them, in a massive unscheduled disassembly.”

I went to two public libraries last weekend and enjoyed some really amazing public programs: Night of Ideas at the SF Public Library and the Foster Youth Museum - Lost Childhoods Exhibit at the Redwood City Library. Then I sat down and wrote a piece about the right to read, because library book bans have been much on my mind, and I wanted to talk about that today, Right To Read day. I feel so lucky. This is my office, and this is my view. Banff is a jewel of the Rockies. I'm on the side of Tunnel Mountain, thusly named because once upon a time, engineers considered putting a tunnel through it. That never happened, but the name stuck. Indigenous folks and allies are trying to get it renamed to Sleeping Buffalo Mountain because that's what it looks like, and it's far more fitting.

I'm obsessed with a futuristic techno utopia, where direct democracy flourishes and thousands of people share presidential power, with every citizen being a parliamentarian. It's a #fediverse kind of country. Here is my newest short story set in such a world.

I wrote a flash fic in 2020 about a dad who's so dedicated to making the world better for his kids,he changes history. Bush was never elected, so Trump was never elected, and the pandemic was handled by competent non-sociopaths. But that also erased his own timeline,including his kids. It's my time-travel fantasy plus the ontological implications thereof.

I wrote about the mythology of the night dancer, one of the most evil characters from this part of the world (East Africa), but whose stories always end up in horror-comedies. When you talk about a night dancer in Uganda, people expect a good laugh.... But my short film is more #dance than horror, a revenge fantasy. I’ll share a map. Yes, a map. It’s been with me in one upgraded form or another since the beginning—over 2-decades ago. The map of Tremjara.

It’s more than functional, it’s a part of me. I’ve literally spent years exploring it & brought memories back with me.

Truly, I’ve walked forests, floated rivers, & crossed plains. I’ve even island-hopped in Pannulus. On & on it goes.

Here’s it’s technical description…

COLOR TREMJARA MAP The image is a color map of the continent of Tremjara on the world of Ontyre. The continent is roughly oval with notable exceptions, the oval tilted southwest to northeast. In the far north are the Frozen Lands, but otherwise the continent is surrounded by three oceans, the Para-Equa in the west, Terminus in the south, and Titania to the east. A long, slim peninsula, along with multiple islands, exists in the northwest. In the west and south are multiple, large islands. The southeastern peninsula is a barren wasteland with some volcanic islands off its coast. There are scattered islands up the eastern coast, most notably Pannulus, a roughly circular archipelago. The continent is roughly divided in half by mountain chains, some more extensive than others. Mountains also exist in other locations, especially the southwest. The west is heavily forested, the east a mix of forests and grasslands. The south desert. Some notable locations follow. Mythwyll in the southwest was the elfin homeland. In the west, Forstava is still the ora’ean homeland. In the east, Emprensa was once the home province of an empire. In the northeast, Draskrith is the realm of the shadow lords. Below that, and as noted, is Pannulus. At the continent’s center is nation of Carrdia. It’s surrounded by mountains, except in the west along its border with Forstava, and in the northeast. The continent’s biggest lake is located there, as is the mighty Key River.
