#ScribesAndMakers #ttmd @johnyNocash I'm really partial to storytelling in music. Which bands or artists do you really feel capture the zeitgeist now? Why? Asks our correspondent @youseeatortoise

It’s a tough question… I’m not really that well up on the now music, largely because to my ears it all sounds so generic. I thought it was maybe just my age, but the singer from The 1975 did a really good analysis of musical trends and defining features across decades. If you listened to a song from the 60s, you could place it quite easily, for example. Listen to a song from 2011 and it could be from anywhere between 2005 and now.

I mentioned Half Man Half Biscuit in another answer, but they have continually captured the zeitgeist with their social commentary.
Back in 1995 they had:
“when I had my loft converted
back into a loft”…

Their most recent album has this to say about Record Store Day:
“Step this way, it’s Record Store Day
The bands are clearing out their spare rooms
If you want that in battleship grey
You’ll have to sell the family heirlooms
Extortion on a level you can hardly conceive
Tarted up in a fibreglass sleeve
That acoustic thing which nobody bought…”

They rarely miss a target!

Slightly responding to the question from @gahlearner

I think it's really interesting, the point you make about folk songs telling stories.

It makes me think of examples like Fairport Convention's Babbacombe Lee, but do you write your songs to reflect historical tales or something more contemporary?

...also I'm sure I saw you mention The Trashcan Sinatras a few weeks back, so who are (were) your major influences in music?

If you've already expressed interest in being a #TTMD featured creator and would like a specific date (e.g. to coincide with a book release, when you have free time, etc.) please let us know. We're flexible with scheduling and can generally accommodate.

If you would like to be a featured creator and haven't told us yet, reach out to @gahlearner @willelm or @saposcat and we'll add you to the list. Currently it will be 2026 unless you request a specific day.

Reposting this to put it on my profile.

⚠️ We made a mistake with the date for the first #TTMD on our July questions list. Please delete yesterday's image or list. We have corrected both, and here comes the new image with our questions for July. ⚠️

Still somewhat aware of #ScribesAndMakers. Today #TTMD with @crcollins

Yet again posting just before midnight (my time) so my usual question is, was there anything you had hoped to be asked which hasn't yet happened? (With your response.)

Secondary question, ooh, different eras. If time travel were possible, which characters would you like to have meet in a cross over, and why? (Or if no way, why not.)

@crcollins

I did my research and went to your website at crcollins.org/

I was really impressed with the maps that chart the different ages of your worlds and that inspired today's question.

Many fantasy worlds are beautifully described, but they can often be rooted in a certain era.

You've created a world which changes over a period of time. What elements are most important to you for emphasising changes in the societies that live within the landscape; such as technology, politics, culture, or religion?

#ScribesAndMakers #ttmd @QuasiTemporal also asked about POV, how I decide who to use, and when to use POV to conceal things from the audience.

I tend to go for who will have the most stake in a particular chapter. The multi-POV structure is largely because characters are spread across a massive country, so often it's whoever's there. In terms of concealing—that's why the precognitive Ian isn't a POV character in the first book despite his Main Character Energy.

#ScribesAndMakers #ttmd @QuasiTemporal asked: I don't think anyone asked "Was there a question you hoped you'd be asked, and how would you answer it", so here it is.

Given that today is release date for my new book, the burning question that I hope everyone has is, "how can I read it?" To which the answer is:
1) Wherever you buy books online
2) The publisher, www.bppress.ca
3) Order it at your local bookstore or library!

#ScribesAndMakers #ttmd @gahlearner asked: What is your favourite dish that's not in the SBC? And do you like to cook yourself or enjoy others' cooking or prefer restaurants?

I love Ethiopian food, and I have recipes for misir wot and shiro wot that are pretty easy but have ingredients that might be a challenge to find for a lot of folks.

I really mean it when I say I live off instant ramen and my ideal state is often just making some for myself and eating in front of the telly. (1/2)
