#ScribesAndMakers 2504.04 — Can you handle praise well, or do you get embarrassed and play your achievement down? CW: self-analysis

Oddly enough, this devolves to gender roles and the confusion an autistic can discover in any social illogic. As a child, I quickly evolved into a listener, observer, and a pleaser with my shyness providing me an escape route from any confrontative situation—things I worked on (had to!) as I became an adult. Wanting to be an author is not entirely compatible with these personality traits regardless of gender—there is a definite forwardness and egoist nuance to insisting on communicating one's ideas—and I couldn't rely on others to meditate for me.

I got praise growing up, especially when doing well in school. Then again, my mother had me convinced I'd die if I didn't bring home top marks. I mostly got to hide from praise. It's not that I don't, didn't, like it, but I could better process it unobserved and generally make it appropriately and comfortably undeserved. A pleaser can't accept being pleased well!

Yeah, I got help. If you've heard of EST, I did that.

Now my reaction to praise is a Venn diagram of who, what, and where. If it is online, where nobody has to see me physically react, I'm a lot more copacetic with it. In person, it can be uncomfortable. I can still find ways to minimize the input but as I get older I'm better at fairly assessing my abilities. I do remember having this one fan at conventions that would greet me. She really wanted a sequel. Maybe she sensed I was shy, I don't know. But I grew to like her reminder.

Poll time!

I'm publishing my first middle grade (MG) story, and need to set a price for the PRINT format. It will be 5x8 inches trim size, with 104 story pages.

I don't have kids, so I'm not sure how to price it. If you have middle schoolers, enjoy reading MG stories, or publish your own MG fiction, what's an acceptable price?

Again, this is for the PRINT format. Thanks!

#WordWeavers 4, Whose advice about your writing would you follow?

I've learned to only listen to solicited advice.

In my view, not everyone is good at giving advice. My stars, does the interwebs ooze with folks spouting advice all over the place, stating all sorts of opinions and preferences as if they're newly discovered, intrinsic truths about the world.

@aurora

Indeed, we're perpetually supposed to be the supporting act, and we're very far from shaking that notion out of our collective subconscious. I can't stand seeing that in myself and so try to break through it:

✨ I am quirky, clever, and make interesting, original, and beautiful things.✨

Let's hear it, ladies. How about you? Say it loud and proud because, for fuck's sake, we're not kicking this can down another generational line!

#ScribesAndMakers 4, Can you handle praise well, or do you get embarrassed and play your achievement down?

As a woman, it seems like you're supposed to play it down. My mother and her sisters are three remarkable spirits who have covertly done so much for so many, but will never, ever acknowledge anything. Which frustrates me.

So, I get irked by my own awkwardness and try to shake it off to embrace some praise. While unabashedly complementing and praising those around me.💜

#ScribesAndMakers 4/3. Would you like to form a writers/creative group?

I have what I call my "Mastermind". Originally three writers, now we're down to my friend and me.

It's been immensely helpful.

We meet weekly online, share experiences, knowledge and most of all, we plot together, we talk about characters and what readers like.

I can very much recommend doing something like this.

#PennedPossibilities 634 — MC POV: How much do you value companionship? Do you always keep people around, or do you prefer to be alone?

Alexios: It isn't about what I want or what I value. My friends stay close, and they always have. We're a family, choom. I'm thankful for it, too. If that means that I value friendship and companionship, then I guess so—the answer's yes.

#WritingCommunity who use #IngramSpark or people general #POD experience — advice needed re colour range for printing.

The ebook cover for my next release is mildly yellow; the print version comes out pretty much white. This has happened with a couple of previous books (apparently I like a pale cream colour in my covers), and I’ve let it roll, but I’d prefer this one to maintain a stronger yellow.

In the interests of not spending $30 a go (postage is a killler here) in adjusting the colour and ordering the proof, is there some way of knowing at what point the colour will be dark enough to be obvious?

(I was going to include a photo, but ironically enough, a cover that looks white to the naked eye comes out cream in the photo 🤷‍♀️)

Introducing the Tinker WriterDeck OS!

Convert any laptop and most chromebooks into a writer deck: A device designed solely for writing.

No distractions.
No internet.
No apps. No games. No social media.

Just writing.

The Tinker WriterDeck is very light weight and specifically seeks to lower the barrier of entry to creating writer decks. It converts older, reused, refurbished, or inexpensive laptops into a dedicated writing machine.

A digital typewriter.

The Tinker WriterDeck sits on top of a "headless" Debian Linux image and boots directly into a console based text editor.

We're using the Tilde Text Editor because it is a simple text editor, has an intuitive User Interface, and allows for customized color schemes for light and dark modes.

Operating System download and instructions on how to convert your laptop into a dedicated writer deck for free are found here: tinker.sh

See below for an example of the writer deck in light mode and dark mode.

If anyone has any questions or needs any help setting your laptop up, let me know here!
