So it seems Meta/Threads are forcibly altering output of the Trans Flag emoji , to only show the two combining elements instead of the actual emoji.
This is appearing correct on the Fediverse, however on Meta, it seems they are removing an aspect of the emoji to make it combined... absolute shite.
@jessienab I mean... did it ever work on threads? If not, I could chalk this up to them just using an outdated version of twemoji (or whatever they use)
@ohanamatsumae I would assume it was working before, surely someone would've raised it as an issue if not. First I've seen or heard about this tbh.
@jessienab If it didn't work before, people probably didn't raise an issue because... they assumed it was just an outdated emoji spec, I imagine. Threads isn't exactly a good place for non-transphobic people to be, anyway.
@jessienab it appears to still work on Facebook and Instagram
@jessienab The trans flag emoji was only added in Emoji 13.0 in 2020 by the Unicode Consortium, so hopefully it was just an oversight in some part of their system.
Coincidentally, I believe Facebook-owned WhatsApp was the first major platform to implement the codepoint sequence before it was even accepted into Unicode.

@jessienab lmao nazis
@jessienab has this impacted other sequences? like things with direction, skin tone, or gender modifiers? emoji are complex and while I'm as inclined as the next person to see meta as maliciously evil, they could also have easily just fucked up and stripped the zero width joiners that make sequences like these work at all. Country flags are another example that use a similar joining trick.
