"Now, if only Valve had a must-have SteamOS exclusive (or freebie) to encourage even more uptake."
can you please never ever ever write for ars technica again
@sterophonick ars technica writer rolls worst opinion ever, asked to fuck off into the distance and then die
@sterophonick “technology doesn’t suck enough, it should suck harder” is such a tech journo take
@sterophonick "If only Valve would do a 180 and make bad decisions like the one I just thought of"
@sterophonick if i could eliminate one thing from the modern collective conscious it would be the obsession with SteamOS as if it's been imbued with some kind of mystical power to change gaming forever
@nepi PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
@sterophonick to continue that thought: am i weird for thinking it's like, religious? people talk about it like they're appealing to a higher power. Then when you explain to them that it's just arch linux they will insist until they're blue in the face that it has special sauce and only Valve has the power to make changes happen
@nepi ughhhh yeah. there's this fuckin fandom of sorts around Steam/Valve that parade them as some kind of guardian angel for the gaming industry
@nepi @sterophonick these are the same people who will tell you it is correct and good for valve to take 30% of an indie's sales, because gabe newell needs another superyacht
@maddy @sterophonick to be fair a SteamOS exclusive would be cool in the sense that SteamOS is just Linux, so having that would be cool.
None of the software I write runs on Windows or macOS anyway. It's more likely to work on Solaris or Android than on macOS.
Because if you tell me that it breaks on Solaris I will actually make an effort into fixing it. If you tell me it breaks on Windows I will just say sorry I have no idea how Windows works so unless you can tell me precisely what is wrong and how to fix it I literally cannot.
@maddy @sterophonick because for Windows it's been like 3 years and I still don't know how to reliably install it.
@maddy @sterophonick they keep making it harder every update. I miss Windows XP.
@sterophonick@wetdry.world "Valve should defeat the whole purpose of them embracing Linux in order to drive up Steam Deck sales."
Why
@sterophonick@wetdry.world OK but it would be funny if they bought back Artifact (their card game) as a SteamOS exclusive https://store.steampowered.com/app/583950/Artifact/
Since no one was playing it anyway
@Baa ok that'd be a good bit
@Baa @sterophonick surprisingly, there are a few people still playing artifact classic, you can enter matchmaking and find matches even now
nobody is playing foundry though
@sterophonick@wetdry.world I mean the notion of some nice linux exclusives could help getting people of windows…
@sterophonick technically, all the virtua fighter 5 games before revo are linux exclusives
@sterophonick i have seen this suggestion bandied about quite a few times by people who think of the steam deck as a console competitor and it's just. cringe. they're posting cringe because they don't get that the steam deck is a handheld pc
@sterophonick@wetdry.world if they did that they'd immediately alienate the people vouching for them in the first place.
@sterophonick@wetdry.world imagine a world where the orange box could only be played on steam machines.
@puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social @sterophonick@wetdry.world You know what I'd be okay with tho? Forcing compatibility with SteamOS if you publish on Steam.
"No, don't worry, we don't lock you down to it, your game will be available on the exact same places as it has always been, but hey, we got this system, you know, the STEAM system, and uuuh you gotta make sure it works there too without limitations, at least through Proton"
@puppygirlhornypost2 @sterophonick it already exists anyway, it’s called aperture desk job [doll thinks its playable on windows though, but it is made for steam deck]
@azalea @puppygirlhornypost2 it is playable on Windows
