I see a lot of people spreading misinformation about Microsoft Recall, so let's be clear with what we know so far:

  • Recall will ONLY WORK on Copilot+ PCs. This is because they have a Snapdragon CPU, which is very efficient at AI tasks.
  • Recall CAN BE DISABLED.
  • You CAN prevent Recall from accessing certain apps and websites
  • Everything Recall does is STORED LOCALLY. This is likely why it requires a powerful CPU.
  • You can manage EVERYTHING about Recall. Delete snapshots, adjust the times it runs, etc.
  • Again, THIS WILL ONLY BE ON COPILOT+ PCs. If you don't want the feature, then simply do not get a Copilot+ PC.

Now can we stop fearmongering about it, please? I know it involves everyone's two least favorite letters right now, but that's not an excuse to straight up spread misinformation.

Windows Latest · Microsoft confirms Windows 11 Recall AI hardware requirementsMicrosoft is reserving the most interesting AI feature for a select lineup of Snapdragon processors. The hardware requirements are high.

Muting this now because every reply has turned into people going "okay well what IF it turns bad IN THE FUTURE" and unless you've got future vision, I do not wish to hear it. It must be a miserable existence to see the worst in everything

@ohanamatsumae "if you don't want the feature **simply** don't get a copilot plus pc" but. that's just. the good pcs. that's the powerful ones.
Public

@eris No, Copilot+ PCs are made SPECIFICALLY for use with Copilot AI. They have very good processors, yes, but that's because they need those very good processors in order to use the AI. It's like buying a rendering farm - you don't need all that unless you're a professional graphic designer or video editor.

Public

@ohanamatsumae @eris the snapdragon isn't only good at AI workloads, it's much more efficient than x86 machines, often performing the same tasks with the same speed at lower power usage

Public

@ohanamatsumae @eris They’ve essentially released it as an open beta, limited to a small hardware range. But with AMD and Intel increasing the percentage of die space for neural networks blocks, and with AMD’s APUs already sufficiently performant, it’s very unlikely to remain that way.

@ohanamatsumae ty for sharing, I definitely got caught up in the misinfo wave and this is all the more reminder for me to verify the things people say even if they are well intentioned

@ohanamatsumae
None of those settings will stop a domestic abuser.
Turn it off? Set them off.
Delete a snapshot? What are you hiding?
Pause collection? What are you hiding?

This is a terrible idea and Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for creating it.

And that doesn't get into issues for anyone living in a police state.

@ohanamatsumae@wetdry.world "stored locally"

onedrive on its way to backup whatever recall generate

Public

@ohanamatsumae This will make infostealer malware sooo much more effective

@ohanamatsumae
"This will only be on Copilot + PCs"
Until Intel/AMD CPUs are powerful enough. Then it will be on all PCs.
"If you don't want the feature don't get a Copilot + PC"
And once it's on all PCs, if you don't want the feature the logical move will be "don't get Windows" I guess ?

Microsoft can't be trusted. Never.

Public

@ohanamatsumae pretty much everything in caps can be followed by "for now"

Public

@ohanamatsumae Some are fearmongering, some are doing risk analysis. And if it's hard to tell one from another, that's not good for the subject.

Public

@ohanamatsumae You can disable Microsoft Recall....

If you click past a vague but ominous warning that some features won't work
And then some important features don't work.
And then an app you need requires it.
And then the next version quietly does upload your info to MS

We know how this goes.

Public

@tokensane You forgot the spontaneous windows update that unexpectedly reenables it.

@ohanamatsumae@wetdry.world I hope I haven't been one of the people you have referred to in this post. My initial reaction was to be extremely nervous about hearing "It works by constantly taking screenshots of your screen". I think the misinformation spreading around is probably not intentional fearmongering, but just people, myself included, not looking in detail to the announcement before commenting on it.

I am happy that it is not rolling out to every windows machine. The fact that they are going in this direction still makes me uneasy, but it's good to know it isn't as bad as I initially thought it was. Thank you for taking the time to make sure correct information is shared across fedi!

@ohanamatsumae@wetdry.world I do still have major concerns though. Just because it is only those computers now does not mean that it will be like that in the future, and if the new processor becomes the new norm like with the M1 chip, it is still a serious issue. There are also, as others have said in the comments here, many potential security issues that I can see coming from this, even if the AI is local.

Public
@robustjumprope @ohanamatsumae There's also the non zero chance that Recall could be later offered for Intel and AMD PCs if they offer the option of doing the AI processing in the cloud. They could snapshot locally and then send the information to One Drive. This is why I'm having some extra plans if this happens
Public
@robustjumprope @ohanamatsumae I forgot to add that also AI workloads can be done on GPUs, so if your PC has a good one you could be targeted as well
Public

@ohanamatsumae it's a cool idea on the surface but it seems like a massive security hole
also it should not be enabled by default

Public

@ohanamatsumae i've been seeing people complaining about this all day, and i didn't have any idea what it actually DOES until i read that article. because we don't actually want to talk about that i guess. as long as it seems as secure as anything else i keep in my local storage, seems cool
