ABANDONWARE SHOULD BECOME PUBLIC DOMAIN!!!! like seriously maybe even open source!! im sick of these corpos shutting down their services!!!
@noah no service only lawsuit !!!!!!!
@noah@wetdry.world make them put the source code into library of congress. Start the timer till public domain.
But also, we’re running out of areas where proprietary software keeps its advantage over open source

@noah
I've thought this too, depending on the type of product it is. It should definitely be the law with regards to OSs. They come with the computer you've bought, then they release a new OS version that won't run on that computer and stop supporting the OS that did. At that point, it should be made open-source.
@noah I’m looking at you, Logitech harmony
@noah@wetdry.world I agree completely. I mean the devs/creators aren't using it anymore, and the public should be allowed to utilize the abandoned software to make their own stuff/archive historic software/networking.
@noah@wetdry.world maybe one day youtube tic toc x and Facebook will all be shut down . That is my dream.
@noah The Same should apply to abandoned hardware. If the company that created my TV hardware does not want to provide updates anymore, then the hardware specifications should become open for people to build upon.
@noah Yes please. Every other day I think how nice of a gallery tool Picasa was.
@noah @leyrer I would like to evangelize https://stopkillinggames.com here #stopkillinggames
It focuses on games that stop working because companies are shutting down servers after end-of-life. That alone is okay, but the companies must be held responsible to remove any "always on" code beforehand. Or open source the server software.
I see it's not exactly the same, but I would argue that it's a good starting point.
@noah but its still illegal to download them.. im sad. so many good pc games from the 2000er years are not available anymore anywhere...
@noah i still hope opera publishes the source code of their pre-chromium engine one day. One day.
@noah "But what if it secretly turned out to be a cult classic that we can milk later with a remaster or sequel?"
@avesbury_rosetta @noah Then George Broussard can go have another aneurysm about it.
@noah I completely agree, but the open source part could cause issues in terms of security -- if the software is abandoned, then it won't get official security patches, meaning that any exploits will remain unfixed, at least officially. Obviously security through obscurity is a terrible strategy, but if a company has been relying on it for the lifetime of the product, then it'll likely have covered up many security holes which will be exploited as soon as they are discovered in the source code.
@noah @MiguelGuthridge that’s an argument for, not an argument against
@mirabilos @noah @MiguelGuthridge If they released the binaries only the bugs would still be found but be much more difficult to patch. The reason they don't even consider open sourcing their stuff is that very often they have internal dependencies with commercial licenses.
@MiguelGuthridge @noah @aris so rip those out, the code may not compile as-is but someone can write an API-compatible replacement or the dependency becomes abandonware itself some day
@noah server software should be freely distributed the moment the original servers shut down
