It’s something I’ll say time and time again: tech “journalists” have spent so much time in the California bubble that they cannot perceive any metrics beyond “market share” and “growth”. It’s why any article they make about ‘Mastodon’ is filled with thoughts that try to compare it to corporate enterprises when they just do not work.

Growth and market share do not matter if you do not need to monetise either of those things. The Fediverse is a success if 1, 100, or a million people use it daily. Facebook is considered failing if 2 people stop using it tomorrow.

But beyond that, I don’t have a stupid autoplay video when I login, I don’t see how that by itself isn’t a winning move.

i think this applies to many other things honestly

my personal favorite example is tesla. tesla is a shitty ev. it can look cool, but it has objectively shitty hardware design, it can only really work in the californian climate (no harsh winters, no harsh summers in populated areas)

and tech journos fucking love them, they sing praises and lick those stupid door handles that are impossible to grapple after any freeze

meanwhile, most people ive met (and myself) genuienly cannot think about owning one in a place like central russia, where the weather can jump between sunny 20c during the day and wet snow at -10c at night
