@farah @halva unless it's a vegan version, yes! It was indeed literally modeled on garum fish sauce, used around the Mediterranean in antiquity, with Lea and Perrins' version inspired by a recipe by Apicus. Then it made a further leap when Japanese cuisine adopted and adapted the recipe into a few more variants.

(Sorry, I get overexcited about culinary history.)
