@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech @cyrus@wetdry.world what instance is the one that shut down because of the vps provider
@jackemled @cyrus @xyhhx how do you even know this lore wtf
@HornyHive@kinky.business @cyrus@wetdry.world @xyhhx@438punk.house oooouch way too real
some people wont like this one lmao
@phenidone @xyhhx kollektiva.social is still running tho
@cyrus shut down by just "regular" criminal activity
@rarely_typical saved for later, mind adding some more context?
@cyrus I have no extra context, just thought that would be funny and is probably why some instances go down
@cyrus @xyhhx I guess Matrix homeservers get shut down for more common reasons...
- Too much effort for few active new users (some)
- Gets spammed by registration because the owner left it open without realizing (much more than you think)
- Gets spammed/harassed by remote accounts (a few)
- Resource strain (some)
- Setup failure (plus.st)
- Opposition to Matrix itself (disroot.org)
- Failure to solicit donations (pragma-messenger.ch)
Some just go down without notice, even...
@cyrus do you mean that not a single instance has been shut down due to cheese exhaustion yet? Now that DOES surprise me.
@cyrus@wetdry.world @xyhhx@438punk.house
- invaded by pedophiles
- invaded by nazis
- doxed
- attempted to run a free speech instance (invaded by nazis AND pedophiles)
- Seized by the FBI / CIA
- Soviet Union domain (.su) too hard to renew
@cyrus ooh ooh, allow me to suggest:
* "argument got way, way, way, WAY out of control"
* "admin revealed to be that one fucker yet again"
* "personal grudge exploded"
* "single-user instance moved to new flavor of the month"
* "policy criticism caused moderation team implosion"
@wrenderlust queer.af
@cyrus@wetdry.world @xyhhx@438punk.house
Cat and catgirl seem likely as potential reasons
@cyrus For me, it was legal risks. Didn't want to be on the hook if someone did something very illegal on my instance without knowing about it, and the political current in my country of residence was very much running that way at the time.
Then there's Monsterpit. Just vanished, no one knows why.
@frummidge the what
@cyrus @xyhhx @frummidge oh how I wish we knew an instance to name, soon, hopefully soon
@freeplay@wetdry.world @cyrus@wetdry.world @xyhhx@438punk.house so "admin used arch on prod" or "faulty system update"
@freeplay@wetdry.world @cyrus@wetdry.world @xyhhx@438punk.house Wait I think the database corruption one is plus st
@atom plus.st was faulty server upgrade apparently, as plus.st now redirects to a webpage which states that
