@boxy this is actually really impressive, usually most graphics adapters made in the last while have a generic 640x480x24bpp fallback mode that windows knows how to operate without additional drivers

@panegyr @boxy If VBE isn't present (or somehow fails to work), Windows will fallback to standard VGA 640x480x4BPP mode. Windows 8 and newer don't support palleted modes at all, so 16-colour mode is set to grey shades, which lets it sidestep the problem.

This is much easier to achieve with Qemu:

@jernej__s @panegyr @boxy at least UI elements are a lot more visible in greyscale compared to the more incomprehensible nightmare that is 4bpp color mode

@winload_exe @panegyr @boxy I'd have to test with regular theme, this is high contrast with my very custom colour scheme.
