Last year #signal also had its multi-device functionality exploited in the wild. thehackernews.com/2025/02/hack

FWIW #deltachat has a dumber multi-device sync model, no device linking, depends on being in the same WiFI for setup (therefore no easy remote exploits), and #OpenPGP signatures and verification for ongoing usage (like all other E2EE messages).

@delta #deltachat should always have 'good enough' support for classic email. That is one of its stengths. This simplifies convincing people to use it. Unencrypted chats (not only message) may be more standing out. Idea: Chats may have 3 states: unencrypted, encrypted, verified. Messages from these state should not be mixed instead having user@mail, user@mail(unverified), user@mail(unencrypted) as contact.
In some scenarios a mutual downgrade may be necessary (lost phone, emergency contact).

While most of the feedback on the #deltachat V2 releases has been positive, some users sense a de-prioritization of "classic unencrypted email" usage.

Indeed the current dozen or so contributors aim to evolve an exceptionally resilient and versatile private messenger app suite, with end-to-end encryption the primary focus and design foundation.

However, we would support friendly forkers to develop a classic e-mail focused app suite -- say "deltamail" (work title).

#deltachat I think I should try delta chat.

I use #OpenBSD .

But also I want it to work for people that have android and IOS phones.
(I assume that is the easy part once I get it to work for myself.)

Which client should I use?

The python one that uses urwid looks not maintained.

And then I was just gonna choose one or both of the main

As far as we know #deltachat supports the widest range of old mobile devices. And it's real often hard work to achieve that. For example, on android three (!) rust/networking experts needed to huddle for many days to sort out "how to get own device IP addresses". They ended up implementing several mechanisns suitable for respective android versions. It became part of the @n0iroh network rust stack that powers Delta's integrated peer-to-peer #webxdc realtime networking.

@avoca [gladtech.social] @Ketakater I also got all of my family and a lot of my wider circle on it using these two strategies:

1. Getting a device that simply does not have #Whatsapp / proprietary messaging apps, i.e.: #Linuxmobile: #Flx1, #LibertyPhone, #Librem5, #Jolla2c, etc. People typically won't care enough about #privacy but they will understand if WA simply does not work on your phone.

2. Kids: They don't have phone numbers (or phones in many cases) but want to be included in family group chats. Once kids got in on it, #DeltaChat spread like wildfire among our extended family, relatives, inlaws and friends. Even a kid with #downsyndrome onboarded their grandpa in seconds while I had earlier struggled to get him on #Signal!

A great thing about Delta Chat is that, unlike #ElementMessenger and other fully-featured #Matrix clients, there's no search and discovery feature so kids do not stumble upon untrusted groups and strangers' profiles.

Помните, я недавно просил помочь с тестированием #DeltaChat? Ну отозвавшиеся наверняка помнят. Тогда мы получили довольно странные результаты. Решив раз и навсегда понять, что происходит, я достал свой старый, любимый, надёжный как пулемёт Максим, смартфон OnePlus 7T. Поставил на него и на мой текущий смартфон (OnePlus 10 Pro) DeltaChat и стал регистрироваться на разных релеях и на разных почтовых серверах и сравнивать результаты.

В общем, если говорить коротко, обнаружилось, что DC на OnePlus 10 Pro не может подключиться ни к одному почтовому серверу по SMTP!!!. К любому релею подключается на ура.
OnePlus 7T отлично подключается к чему угодно.

Я вообще не могу представить, почему такое может происходить, но результат исследования однозначен — у меня новый адрес DC.

We do not aim for #deltachat to be another social media app. No #ai summaries or suggestions. No public directory of contacts. No discovery via outside identifiers (mobile phone or email). Just you and your contacts privately messaging, in a solid simple user interface on all platforms. End-to-End encryption enforced on two layers. #chatmail relays know and retain nothing, no content or metadata. #webxdc apps allow for custom interactions on top of chats.
