DRM is so cool as a technology i just hate the fact that its DRM and its designed to screw people over

reversing DRM systems is always like "wtf that's a really neat way to resolve the issue and also fuck you for doing that"

@ipg @gsuberland I’ve had to review DRM system source code in beta and I always feel like “sigh, yes, good job I guess, this should be pretty annoying…”

@0xabad1dea @ipg @gsuberland I feel like I'm a terrible person whenever I had to constructively review lockdown code.... It's not quite the same as DRM, but it still doesn't feel good.

@0xabad1dea @ipg same vibes with reviewing DRM in IoT and embedded systems. like, sigh, I guess this fulfils its awful purpose? congrats?

although my employer generally refuses work that would have a deleterious effect (e.g. medical device DRM where there's no safety angle), which is a good start.

@ipg quite literally, when reverse-engineering the DSi boot ROMs they had this interesting hybrid asymmetric encrypt+sign scheme, which is pretty neat because it delivers a public-key signature *and* an ephemeral symmetric encryption key at once. which was then used to encrypt and protect firmware images from leaking or being modified. and the nonstandardness of the scheme meant it wasn't as vulnerable as the 3DS with its sighax vuln and boot9strap exploit
