a large part of why wdw is run the way it is is because i aimed from the beginning to make it sustainable, intentionally trying to keep costs low and running it on efficient systems
although the server situation is not as good as it was a year ago, i'm still keeping this in mind; right now wdw is sharing server space with some other projects that i run, meaning that the bills are shared between stuff like esmbot as well so i'm not paying anything to run this that i wouldn't be paying otherwise
what i'm trying to say is that wdw is not shutting down anytime soon, if it ever does reach the point where it has to shut down because of rising costs or some other server-related event then there will absolutely be another indicator; a canary in the coal mine, so to speak
that being said, if you'd like to help support the stuff i run, then feel free to toss me a few bucks on ko-fi; anything is greatly appreciated https://ko-fi.com/TheEssem
addendum: i also wanted to avoid what ended up happening to my first ever instance, which i started in summer 2020
at the time i was also running it on the same server as esmbot, but this was also when it was still quite unstable in terms of resource usage; it had just begun to grow in popularity, and so there was never any free ram available
since this was the beginning of the pandemic and i had almost no money beforehand, it only lasted for 2 or 3 months before i ended up shutting it down to make space for esmbot
things have changed a lot since then, esmbot is much more efficient now and the most intensive part (the image processing) has been split onto other servers (and the actual main server is much more powerful now), so i feel more comfortable running something like this alongside it
@esm i don't think i remember the OG instance, but then again I joined WDW in 2021
@ioletsgo there are a few people still here that also had accounts there, wdw started at the beginning of august 2021 so you're definitely one of the first people to make an account here
wdw is actually my third fedi instance; i started another one a few days beforehand, but ended up replacing it with wdw after i realized that i didn't like dealing with the software it was running
the first instance's domain is currently host to a couple of webpages and a bluesky sandbox pds
@esm THERE WAS A WET DRY WORLD PREDECESSOR?!?!
@Ebicthings123 the domain was this-is-epic.space
@esm okay cool
@esm@wetdry.world I tossed a couple of bucks your way
Supporting the instance I'm on is probably a good thing to do
@esm
I kept reading wdw as Walt Disney world
@bl i'm aware, i've notified freeplay about it
@bl idk
@kix3n from what i can tell it's a relatively common expression here in the southern us
@ShadowJonathan @kix3n @esm I think I know it because we (used to be) coal country
@ShadowJonathan @yassie_j @kix3n @esm wait that's why they're called canary builds?? holy shit that makes sense
@emmmaaaaa @ShadowJonathan @kix3n @esm
small domino: James Watt and Matthew Boutlon invent the modern steam engine in 1775
big domino:
@yassie_j @kix3n @emmmaaaaa @esm I love the decomposition of visual memes to textual format like this
@esm you do such a great job essem, I really appreciate WDW and that’s because of you as well
@esm did my shitpost inspire you to post this lmao
@vee i've been thinking about posting this anyways
