discord has ruined the definition of the word "server" for potentially an entire generation of people
@esm yeah. i wish they would call them guilds like they do internally. or something like that :P like i like "discord server" as an expression but its Wrong !!
@esm@wetdry.world while I agree, man I can NOT keep calling these things "guilds" it hurts every time I say it
@esm holy shit this
@esm@wetdry.world Unlike the fediverse, for instance :P
@devnull@mamot.fr @esm@wetdry.world Thank you for recognising it :)
@esm I kinda wish they stuck with calling them guilds.
@esm@wetdry.world Minecraft and Gmod taught me right, don't you worry
@esm@wetdry.world the com sci profs at my uni who use discord for their classes insist on calling it a "discord group" and honestly that should really be what it is
@esm I wonder if that's the reason why mastodon decided to call their servers "instances".
@starsider @esm instance =/ server
@ifrit In this context, what is the difference? I don't know of any server that runs more than one instance. Particularly when we talk about Mastodon, because it's not very efficient and we often see the opposite: one instance with multiple servers (e.g. web server, sidekiq, database...) and in all cases it's still one public facing server handling all the traffic.
@starsider "I don't know of any server that runs more than one instance", but could be "and we often see the opposite: one instance with multiple servers", because instance =/ server ;)
@ifrit At the end I added "and in all cases it's still one public facing server handling all the traffic". I.e. when you connect to masto.ai you connect to one specific server. Anyway, it still makes more sense than with discord. A discord "server" is more like a chatroom that contains other chatrooms. They don't have an address, a host name, or anything like that. It's just some internal ID managed by discord's actual servers.
@starsider @esm a mastodon instance can be made up of more than one server
@esm that's because a server is now called cloud
@esm them and Slack.
@esm
Although in that vein, I present you: VPN
And there's a bunch of other overloaded terms...
@esm YEP. I find myself being annoyed by this on a regular basis.
@esm X11 is what did it for me. The server is here, where I'm typing and the client is over there, in the machine room.
@esm the servers of the now are the clans of the then.
@esm@wetdry.world they literally call it so many different things themselves too I've seen Discords, Servers and Guilds
@esm@wetdry.world how the fuck can't the devs even stick with one name
@esm one reason why I hate them
@esm conspiracy theory that they call them “servers” to make them seem more independent than they really are
@esm They had to make it more gamer to appeal to the gamers though
@esm
Imagine an actually federated Discord alternative. No not Matrix, its not quite the same.
@osaka xmpp?
@esm
I havent actually tried xmpp yet. But most people say that the clients are too complicated.
@osaka I use dino and blabber.im and they're both pretty nice to use
@esm we're pretty ok actually, most people who have even steped close to tech i know understand that a server isn't just discord
@esm homie you're gonna HATE the restaurant industry
@esm idk i call these "guilds"
@esm going to start calling servers anticlients
@esm You mean it's not a synonym for waiter?
@esm they were going to call it "guild" but I think they changed it to market to teamspeak users.
@esm@wetdry.world Discord is one of few pieces of software that I revile. #furry #therian
@esm the old days where you needed a vps and ssh terminal knowledge to setup a team speak or ventrillo server
My biggest concern with discord is the fact of how much of a bubble it is. It has literally no user API's whatsoever, and trying to make your own violates the ToS because they don't allow you to try and pop said bubble. Your only option to interact with people on the app is to open it. And you are out of luck if you don't want to use the app, but the rest of your friend group does, and won't change apps either.
Coupled with the fact that nothing is indexed either. Not servers nor server forums, everything is just a pain.
@esm and the worst part is it's fucking by design
@esm@wetdry.world to compensate we should just call everything a "guild" like god intended

@slips@mk.slipfox.xyz @esm@wetdry.world did you know it's actually called a guild on discord internally?
@esm some day I will set up one of the open source alternatives to Discord and Twitch. The difficulties are the bots/integrations between those projects, and normally they don't exist.
